VoIP line type
How to check if a number is VoIP
A VoIP number uses an internet-based phone service. Run the free phone lookup and check the Phone Line Type field to see whether the number is reported as VoIP, mobile, landline, or toll-free.
Why the number itself is not enough
A VoIP number can have the same country code, area code, and length as a mobile or landline number. Its visible format does not identify the service type. A line type lookup evaluates the complete number and returns the category available for that number.
Imagine two business contacts with numbers in the same area code. One could be a conventional landline and the other a VoIP line. The area code tells you about number origin, not which service currently handles either number.
Can you detect Google Voice or TextNow?
Yes. PhoneValidator.com can identify numbers from Google Voice, TextNow and other VoIP providers. Check Phone Line Type for the classification and Phone Company for the provider returned by the lookup. Provider details may not be available for every number.
A Google Voice or TextNow number is not automatically fake. People and businesses use these services for legitimate calls and messages. Use the provider information to understand a number, alongside its line type and other lookup details.
How to read a VoIP check
- Enter the complete phone number in the free lookup. Include the country dialing code for an international number.
- Read the Phone Line Type result. VoIP is one possible classification alongside mobile, landline, and toll-free.
- Review the fake or invalid indicator and other number details before using the record in your workflow.
Phone numbers may move between providers or line types. Porting information varies by country, and Canadian details may reflect the number's original assignment. If a recent change matters to your decision, account for that limitation.
What the result does not prove
VoIP classification does not identify an owner or make a judgment about a person or business. It does not confirm possession, consent, current location, or whether a call or text will reach someone. A mobile or landline classification carries the same limits. Use a separate process when you need someone to confirm control of a number.
Check VoIP across your workflow
Use the free lookup for a single number. To review a contact list, upload a CSV file and choose a line type lookup. The API supports line type checks in an application workflow.
